Uncovering Athens' Ancient Harbour - Greece
The Zea Harbour Project (ZHP) is a combined land and underwater archaeological investigation of the ancient harbours of Zea and Mounichia in the Piraeus (Athens’ harbour city) in Greece. Launched in 2002 under the auspices of the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities, the 26th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities (until 2009) and the Danish Institute at Athens, ZHP’s mission is to survey, excavate, and publish the archaeological remains of the ancient naval bases of the Piraeus. The Carlsberg Foundation has funded the project since 2004.
In this interview, James Blake Wiener of the Ancient History Encyclopedia speaks with Dr. Bjørn Lovén, Associate Fellow in Maritime Archaeology at the University of Southern Denmark, and director of the ZHP.

Underwater Cultural Heritage in Vietnam
An international, interdisciplinary research group comprised of researchers from, or associated with, the Institute of Nautical Archaeology at Texas A&M University, Monash University and Murdoch University as well as Vietnamese researchers from the Institute of Archaeology (Vietnamese Academy of Social Sciences) were in Vietnam in November and December 2012. They conducted maritime archaeological and related projects at the sites of two important naval battles in 1288 A.D. at Bach Dang and Van Don. This international collaborative project has been undertaken since 2008. The survey included visual inspection, geophysical survey using Side Scan Sonar, and test coring/probing at selected locations based on the 2011 remote sensing survey. This work aimed to build up a more detailed picture of the historical naval battles by linking the two sites and to assess the targeted areas and the palaeoenviromental conditions. Investigation of the intangible cultural heritage associated with the two battles was conducted through interviews at Quan Lan island, a focus group with elders from Huong Hoc and visiting shrines, temples and important sites related to the Battle of Van Don and the Battle of Bach Dang.
