Revue Patrimoine Mondial Nº 74 - Encourager la résilience
ISSN: 1020-4520

International Journal of Heritage Studies
Volume 21, Issue 4, 2015. Special Issue on Heritage Erasure
In the light of recent events in the Middle East, there is a need for more discussion of the historic significance and cultural meaning of obliterated or vandalised heritage sites. The aim of this special issue of International Journal of Heritage Studies on ‘Heritage Erasure’, co-edited by Cornelius Holtorf and Troels Myrup Kristensen, is to consider values in obliterated heritage sites. Six papers discussing case-studies and examples from the US, Turkey, Syria, and Bahrain, among others, explore questions about the destruction of heritage: what exactly do we mean by different forms of destruction? How is heritage being changed and transformed by different destructive processes? How does destruction relate to preservation? Which values and benefits may destruction have in relation to heritage?

Unite4Heritage: United Nations University joins UNESCO campaign to protect heritage in danger
The United Nations University (UNU) and UNESCO today brought together scholars, archeologists, historians and writers to discuss ways of opposing the widespread destruction of cultural heritage in Iraq, Syria and other countries in conflict. The symposium, entitled "Mobilization for heritage: Iraq, Syria and other countries in conflict," took place at the Organization’s Paris Headquarters.

Documental "Past with Future: From Archaeology to World Heritage"
UNESCO World Heritage sites are the best, official and valued proof of the importance the past has in the present. But all the work behind it, which makes enjoying Cultural heritage possible, especially from an archaeological perspective, is almost unknown to visitors and inhabitants. There is a great gap between what experts or people responsible for the management of this heritage understand, and what visitors and inhabitants perceive or appreciate about World Heritage. The remaining challenge is to bring citizen and expert positions closer, on decisions such as what to show, what to preserve, what to value of
the common past, transcending the current borders and modifying them, going beyond the political and official recognition of these places by UNESCO.
This documentary has been made as a result of a research project led by the Complutense University of Madrid. The sites displayed together with the interviews that appear are just a "small evidence" of the rich heritage existing in Spain, and as a consequence, of the importance that its proper management and use have in improving the life of the citizens.
